Five of Film i Väst’s co-productions has been selected to Toronto International Film Festival. All shot or postproduced in Västra Götaland, in western Sweden. The five are, in respectively sections:

Special Presentations:

  • Tell it to the Bees by Annabel Jankel. Academy Award winner Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger star in this wrenching drama of a shunned small-town doctor and beekeeper in postwar Britain who befriends a struggling mother and son, helping them discover that love can be found in many forms.

Contemporary World Cinema:

  • Border (Gräns) by Un Certain Regard-winner Ali Abbasi. Ali Abbasi’s Border follows the story of a border agent who uses her ability to sense or smell human emotions to catch smugglers — but when one man confounds her detection, she’s forced to confront a new reality.

Masters:

  • Our Time (Nuestro Tiempo) by Carlos Reygadas. A couple’s open relationship begins to crumble when the husband can’t control his jealousy, in Carlos Reygadas’ heartfelt exploration of marriage and intimacy, featuring the director and his wife in the lead roles
  • The Wild Pear Tree by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, in competition in Cannes 2018. An aspiring young author returns home from college to pursue his passion for literature, but is faced with a complicated family dynamic caused by his father’s gambling addiction, in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s (Winter Sleep) hypnotic and affecting tale of discovery.

TIFF Docs:

  • Heartbound (Hjertelandet) by Janus Metz and Sine Plambech
    Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden (co-produced by Film i Väst and Vilda Bomben). This dual effort from Janus Metz (Borg vs McEnroe) and Sine Plambech (Trafficking) chronicles the lives of several women who leave their home countries in order to find husbands and provide for their families.
