Synopsis
The film is about Alicja, who has suffered memory loss and recreated her own independent lifestyle. Two years later, she returns to her family while simultaneously resisting her role as wife, mother, and daughter. Her questioning husband and son struggle to accept this woman who seems familiar yet behaves like a stranger. Feelings of alienation, love, and revelation reignite her inner spark.
Production Facts
Agnieszka Smoczyńska was educated at the Faculty of Radio and Television in Katowice and in master classes at the Wajda Film School. She has made a number of short and feature films as well as documentaries that have been celebrated at both Polish and international festivals. Her first feature film, "The Lure" (2015), experiments with the genres of musical and horror. The film has been awarded at festivals in Fantasporto, Sofia, Montreal, Vilnius, and Sundance, where she received the Special Jury Prize for “a unique vision and design.” This year she also received the Global Filmmaking Award at Sundance.
"Fugue", with a script by Gabriela Muskala, is a Swedish-Polish-Czech co-production. Producer MD4 (Poland), in co-production with Axman Production (Czech Republic), Common Ground Pictures (Sweden), Odra-Film (Poland), Mazowiecki i Warszawski Fundusz Filmowy (Poland), Film i Väst (Sweden), with Magic Lab (Czech Republic) as partner and with support from the Polish Film Institute, Czech Film Fund, Eurimages, The Lower Silesia Film Fund from the funds of City of Wrocław and Lower Silesia Region.
