Synopsis

"The Wild Pear Tree" is about the promising writer Sinan, who returns to his hometown and pours everything into saving up the money he needs to publish his works. At the same time, he is held back by his father's gambling debts, which hinder his own ambitions.

Production Facts

Nuri Bilge Ceylan has previously directed eight feature films. With "Mayis Sikintsi" ("Clouds of May") (1999), he was nominated for a Golden Bear in Berlin in 2000. In 2014, he won the Palme d’Or in Cannes with his film "Kis Ukykusu" ("Winter Sleep"), where he also received the FIPRESCI critics’ award. In 2011, he won the Grand Prize of the Jury with "Pojken med cykeln" (2011), where he was also nominated for a Palme d’Or. In 2008, he was nominated for a Palme d’Or for "Three Monkeys", for which he also won Best Director. In 2006, he was nominated for a Palme d’Or for "Climates", which earned him the FIPRESCI critics’ award. In 2003, he was nominated for a Palme d’Or for "Distant" (2002) and won the Grand Prize of the Jury. In 1995, he was nominated for a Palme d’Or for the short film "Koza". He has also received multiple nominations for the European Film Awards, where in 2000 he won the FIPRESCI critics’ award for "Mayis Sikintisi".
