Eagles of the Republic chosen as Sweden’s Oscar entry
)
It is now confirmed that Tarik Saleh’s "Eagles of the Republic" is Sweden’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature Film. The 98th Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on March 15, 2026.
In Eagles of the Republic Egypt’s most adored actor, George Fahmy (Fares Fares) is pressured to star in a film commissioned by the highest authorities. He reluctantly accepts the role and finds himself thrown into the inner circle of power. Like a moth drawn to the flame he begins an affair with the mysterious wife of the general overseeing the film.
Once again, Tarik Saleh proves he belongs in the upper echelon of international filmmakers. The fact that Eagles of the Republic was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in Cannes earlier this year, included in the Centrepiece section at the Toronto International Film Festival, and is now Sweden’s Oscar candidate for Best International Feature Film, speaks to the film’s remarkable artistic quality. Congratulations to everyone involved!
Kristina Börjeson, Head of Production at Film i Väst
The film is written and directed by Tarik Saleh and produced by Linus Stöhr Torell / Unlimited Stories, Linda Mutawi, Johan Lindström / Apparaten, and Alexandre Mallet Guy / Memento Production, in co-production with, among others, SVT and Film i Väst. The film has received support from the Swedish Film Institute’s former film commissioner Lena Runge. "Eagles of the Republic" will have its Swedish theatrical release on November 14.
