Production has now started in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Mia Hansen-Løve’s international feature film "If Love Should Die". Renate Reinsve stars as the pioneering writer Mary Wollstonecraft. Film i Väst is a co-producer, with eight days of filming taking place in the region.
French writer and director Mia Hansen-Løve ("Bergman Island", "One Fine Morning", "Things to Come") is currently in the Västra Götaland region filming "If Love Should Die", a historical drama about English writer and thinker Mary Wollstonecraft.
Wollstonecraft was one of the most radical voices of the Enlightenment and is best known for "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" (1792). The film follows her life during the turbulent years surrounding the French Revolution – from her life in London and her decision to support herself as a writer to her journey to revolutionary France.
Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve stars as Mary Wollstonecraft. She has established herself as one of the Nordic region’s most acclaimed actors internationally. She won the Best Actress Award at Cannes for Joachim Trier’s "The Worst Person in the World" and was also nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Joachim Trier’s "Sentimental Value", which premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
“It is a great pleasure to be part of bringing such an international and artistically ambitious production to Västra Götaland. Mia Hansen-Løve is a director with a distinctive and deeply personal approach to filmmaking, and with Renate Reinsve in the lead role and such a highly accomplished creative team, this is a production that truly puts the region on the international film map. We are proud that Film i Väst is a co-producer,” says Kristina Börjeson, Head of Production of Film i Väst.
Reinsve stars alongside Johnny Flynn and Vicky Krieps. Flynn has appeared in "Ripley", "Emma" and "One Life", among others, while Krieps is known for "Phantom Thread", "Corsage" and "Bergman Island". The supporting cast includes Charlie Kelly, Will Keen, Tom Sturridge and Jane Beever.
"If Love Should Die" is a European co-production between the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Spain, Norway and Sweden.
The film is written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. The creative team includes cinematographer Claire Mathon, known for "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" and "Spencer", as well as Hansen-Løve’s long-time editor Marion Monnier.
"If Love Should Die" is produced by Intake Films (United Kingdom), Les Films Pelléas (France), Wildcard (Ireland), Elastica Films (Spain), Mer Film (Norway) and Kjellson & Wik (Sweden), and backed and produced by RT Features and Anonymous Content. Film i Väst is co-producer together with, among others, ARTE. International sales are handled by Goodfellas.'
