The Golden Globe nominations has been announced: Magnus von Horn’s Gothenburg-filmed The Girl with the Needle was nominated for Best International Film. Sebastian Stan received a nomination for Best Actor, and Jeremy Strong was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Ali Abbasi’s film The Apprentice. Both films were co-produced with Film i Väst. Additionally, there were three wins at the European Film Awards and one at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).

Magnus von Horn’s Gothenburg-filmed The Girl with the Needle has enjoyed significant international success since its premiere in the main competition at Cannes, where it vied for the Palme d’Or. It is Denmark’s Oscar submission and has been featured at numerous festivals, including the Toronto and London Film Festivals. The Swedish co-producer is Nordisk Film.

Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice follows the rise to power of a young Donald Trump through a Faustian pact with the influential lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn. The film has garnered significant attention, particularly in the U.S., and has been screened in cinemas worldwide. This film was also a Palme d’Or contender. The Swedish co-producer is Hobab.

European Film Awards

Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel’s film Armand was awarded the Camera d’Or for debut directors at the Cannes Film Festival. At the European Film Awards, it received a corresponding honor: the European Discovery – Prix Fipresci. It is also Norway’s Oscar submission. The Swedish co-producer is Prolabs Produktion.

Jagna Dobesz received the European Production Design Award for her work on Magnus von Horn’s The Girl with the Needle.

Frederikke Hoffmeier won the European Original Score award for the music in The Girl with the Needle

Film i Väst’s co-productions were also nominated for three additional European Film Awards at the gala in Lucerne, Switzerland.

BIFA

The British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) took place, where Lisa Mustafa won the award for Best Hair and Make-Up for James Floyd and Sally El Hosaini’s film Unicorns. The Swedish co-producer is Filmgate Films.
