Synopsis

Nikolai, a wealthy landowner and a man of the world, invites some of his friends to his country estate. The estate is soon filled with guests from the upper echelons of society—boyars and officers. Their time is occupied with grand meals, parlour games, and lengthy discussions on death and the Antichrist, progress and morality. At the same time, they fall into their own trap, believing that history never repeats itself; none of the guests can realize that the course of events at the estate has caught them in a snare.
