Ahead of this year’s edition, Film i Väst nominated the city of Gothenburg in the “City of Film” category and Götheborg of Sweden in the “Location of the Year - Site/Man-Made” category for the Global Production Awards 2026. It has now been confirmed that both have been shortlisted. On top of that, the Nordic Ecological Standard (NES) has also been nominated in the “Sustainability Initiative” category. NES was initiated and developed by The Five Nordics, with Film i Väst involved both operationally in its working group and strategically at board level. The awards ceremony will take place in connection with the Cannes Film Festival on 18 May.
The Götheborg of Sweden is one of the world’s largest operational wooden sailing ships and a fully functional reconstruction of an 18th-century merchant vessel, built using traditional craftsmanship. The ship is rich in handmade details and took more than ten years to complete.
In the feature film "The Testament of Ann Lee", the Götheborg was used not only as a setting but as a living filming location. The film depicts Ann Lee’s journey from England to America in the 18th century, and the onboard environment provided the production with a high level of historical authenticity.
Gothenburg stands out as one of Europe’s most production-efficient mid-sized film cities thanks to its combination of strong resources and high flexibility. The city offers short decision-making processes, low bureaucracy, and solid infrastructure, making productions smooth and cost-effective.
A particular strength is the unusually wide variety of filming environments within close proximity—from urban cityscapes and industrial settings to forests, coastline, countryside, and archipelago—making it possible to “film all of Sweden within 40 minutes.” Combined with an experienced workforce, established post-production facilities, and a well-developed support system, Gothenburg is a reliable and attractive filming destination for both national and international productions.
The Global Production Awards is an international film and TV award that recognises outstanding and sustainable work in film and television production, locations, and studios. The awards are presented by Media Business Insight, the publishers of leading industry titles such as Screen International, Screen Global Production, The Knowledge, World of Locations, and Broadcast.
