Three national Oscar submissions for Film i Väst co-productions. A new drama series from Thomas Vinterberg and Erik Poppe’s historic drama Quisling coming up to region Västra Götaland. Wrap for Lukas Moodysson’s Together 99. And cinema premieres for Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, Tarik Saleh’s Boy from Heaven and Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom Exodus on Viaplay. This is some of the latest news from Film i Väst.

Academy Awards, EFA and European Film Awards

  • Iceland has nominated Berlin winner of Label Europa Cinemas, Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson’s Beautiful Beings as it’s Oscar submission for 2023. In Denmark Ali Abbasi’s Holy Spider  has been selected. The film was nominated Palme d’Or in Cannes. The same goes for Tarik Saleh’s Boy from Heaven, also a winner of Best Screenplay in Cannes, now Sweden’s submission.
  • Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason has been nominated Best Performance by the Actor at the prestigious Emmy awards for his role in the Swedish mini- series A Royal Secret. 
  • Three co-productions are nominated for Nordic Council Film Prize: Hlynur Pálmason’s Godland (Denmark),  Valdimar Jóhannson’s Lamb (Iceland) and Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World (Norway).
  • So far six co-productions have been pre-nominated for European Film Awards, Best European Film: Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson’s Beautiful Beings, Tarik Saleh’s Boy from Heaven, Hlynur Pálmason’s Godland, Ali Abbasi’s Holy Spider, Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness. Furthermore Sanna Lenken’s Comedy Queen has been nominated Young Audience Award.

Shootings in region Västra Götaland

  • Erik Poppe  is coming to Studio Fares in Trollhättan with his historical drama, Quisling, about the Norwegian nazi collaborator and traitor Vidkun Quisling. His last feature The Emigrants was also shot in our region.
  • Principal photography has commenced on Families Like Ours, the first TV drama series by Academy-Award and BAFTA winning Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round, The Hunt). It boasts a stellar cast, many of them well known for leading roles in Vinterberg’s earlier productions and drama series like Borgen, Chernobyl, The Killing: Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Paprika SteenHelene Reingaard Neumann, Magnus MillangEsben Smed, Amaryllis April August, Albert Rudbek Lindhardt, Thomas Bo LarsenAsta August, David Dencik
  • Lukas Moodysson has wrapped his sequel to Together (2000): Together 99. It is set 24 years after the events of the first film. The once-thriving community Together is now the world’s smallest commune, consisting of just two people: Göran and Klasse, played by Gustaf Hammarsten and Shanti Roney, who reprise their roles from the original film. Feeling a bit lonely, Göran and Klasse decide to get the old gang back together for a reunion. “Together 99 will be the world’s saddest comedy,” Lukas Moodysson said at Film i Väst’s press conference in Cannes.
  • Astrid Lindgren’s world-famous story Ronja the Robber’s Daughter will be shot in region Västra Götaland later on this autumn into a major Viaplay Original family fantasy series directed by Lisa James Larsson. The series follows the adventures of a young girl born into a band of robbers in a medieval Scandinavian fortress. As Ronja grows up, she learns that the surrounding forest can be a magical and sometimes dangerous place filled with strange creatures. But when Ronja befriends the young boy Birk from a rival band, a vicious family feud ignites, at the same time as a notorious bailiff arrives to rid the area of robbers once and for all. Ronja and Birk flee into the forest and try to survive on their own.

Virtual Production wall in Studio Fares

The construction has begun on Europe’s largest projector-based Virtual Production wall in Studio Fares in Trollhättan.  Film i Väst is investing in a new technical solution for a specially designed projection wall.  This creates completely new possibilities for recording in the 36 × 36 meter large studio.The projector based Virtual Production wall will be one of the largest in the world and can be used in early 2023.
