Italian director Jonas Carpignano’s feature film A Chiara has been selected for Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is produced by Stayblack in co-production with Snowglobe and Film I Väst. Part of the postproduction was made in region Västra Götaland by Haymaker and CAN Film.
A Chiara is the fourth Film i Väst co-production in Cannes. Already announced are Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World in Official Selection and Valdimar Jóhansson’s Lamb and Eskil Vogt’s The Innocents in Un Certain Regard.
The Guerrasio family and friends gather to celebrate Claudio and Carmela’s oldest daughter’s 18th birthday. There is a healthy rivalry between the birthday girl and her 15-year-old sister Chiara as they compete on the dancefloor. It is a happy occasion, and the close-knit family are in top form. However, everything changes the next day when the father disappears. Chiara, unconvinced by the cover story, starts to investigate. As she gets closer to the truth, she is forced to decide what kind of future she wants for herself.
A Chiara is the fourth contribution in Cannes by Jonas Carpignano. 2017 his A Ciambra won Label Europa Cinemas in Directors’ Fortnight, co-produced with Film i Väst. In 2015 Mediterranea was nominated a Golden Camera and in 2014 his short A Ciambra was nominated Discovery Award.
